From the US to Europe—navigate certification with confidence
In the US, vehicle safety is regulated by NHTSA under a self-certification system, which includes FMVSS, FMCSR and state regulations. Federal environmental certification must be issued by the EPA, while CARB also issues its own executive orders for vehicles sold in California.
Vehicles sold in Canada must comply with the CMVSS and emission regulations SOR/2003-2. Vehicle safety compliance is overseen by Transport Canada, following an initial approval and subsequent self-certification system. In addition, manufacturers must ensure vehicles meet Canada’s EMC standard ICES-002.
Mexico's vehicle certification NOM is a mandatory technical requirement for market entry. Key requirements cover vehicle safety, emissions and fuel efficiency. All new vehicles, whether imported or domestically produced, must undergo certification testing and obtain approval before being sold or used in Mexico.
The European WVTA is based on the directive EU 2018/858, requiring vehicles to meet safety, environmental and other technical standards covering over 50 regulations. Certified vehicles can be sold in the European countries, with approval granted by EU member state authorized bodies.
The UKCA vehicle certification has replaced the EU's WVTA post-Brexit. Based on the UK Road Vehicle Regulations, it requires vehicles to meet safety and environmental requirements. The certification is issued by authorities designated by the UK Department for Transport and applies to new vehicles sold in the UK market.
Vehicle homologation in MERCOSUR follows harmonized regulations based on international standards, with mutual recognition among member states. This system streamlines approvals, reduces duplicate testing, and ensures consistent safety and environmental compliance across Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.
